Tracy Chapman literally takes my breath away. I listen to this, and I immediately notice it’s all I can do to take in a steady and uninterrupted flow of air from the very first note because of the overwhelming connection I am forced to have with my emotions and soul. When Tracy Chapman sings a song directed at who we are or how we feel she leaves no doubt that you will get it all. It’s hard to believe her lyrics and music could be anything other than what it is because these songs done in any other way or by any other artis would never have the impact that they do. Every time she sings, she immediately sets out to establish a direct connection between her soul and ours and leaves us with no hope of resistance. It’s like she is saying that she will sing this song this way and to deliver it in any other way would be doing herself and anyone listening a grave injustice. There will never be another artist capable of mastering the art of connecting the true essence of one human to another though music like Tracy Chapman and to me each one of her songs is like a gift.
